I hope to find you well! A few weeks back, I had this idea that when I write, I not only want to share “Coaching Tips,” but I also want to share how I apply them to my life. Oftentimes, there is this misconception that because I am a coach and a therapist, I somehow “make the right choices all of the time.” Well, I have a little secret: I do not; I am an ongoing work in progress. I admit, I have a lot of knowledge on how to live a well-balanced, joyful and fulfilled life; this part is true. However, the amount of knowledge I have would be useless if I did not put it into practice each and every day! I continuously have to practice self-awareness, self-compassion, and have an ongoing willingness to change or take action even when I don’t really feel like it…
With all of that being said, let me share a little story with you! A few weeks ago, I felt a little off. I was grabbing for sugary foods, eating things that were higher in fat, and feeling more tired than usual (which of course could have been related to the foods I was eating). I also just kept saying to myself, “I just feel bored!” So I started to assess myself. I started to question, “Am I low in vitamin D,” “Maybe I have seasonal affective disorder,” “I wonder if my vitamin B levels are low,” “Maybe it is my thyroid or hormones,” and the list went on and on. Of course these things are important to look at, but I was not getting the sense that these were the cause of my feelings of boredom and low energy.
One thing I teach in my coaching practice is when you are feeling “off,” it is important to ask yourself, “What do I need to do for myself right now?” So, I took my own advice and did just that! Do you know what I learned? I learned that I needed to schedule some fun! I was grabbing for the sugar and fatty foods because it was fun! I did not see that one coming, to tell you the truth! What I had realized was that over the past couple of months, we have been so busy with work, kids’ activities etc. that I had not planned a whole lot of “me” fun in my schedule! Here is the thing… I know this! I just wrote an article on joy! But even when you know this stuff inside and out, you can still get stuck if you are not practicing self-awareness. Life can just take over without you even realizing it, and before you know it, you are in a “funk!”
So I then I asked myself what I needed to do, and I realized I really needed a date with my husband. So that is what we did. We had a great time; it was so nice to reconnect and have a conversation that went deeper than, “What are we going to do for dinner?” Not only was it wonderful to reconnect with him, but it was amazing what it did for my boredom and lack of energy!
There was another time a few weekends back when, well, let’s just say I was feeling slightly challenged in the “parenting department”. I, again, asked myself what I needed. I learned I needed to get outside and again have some fun! So my oldest son and I drove to a sledding hill, went sledding and had a great time. Disclaimer – when I feel “bored” and my energy is low, sometimes the last thing that I want to do is something that requires energy! However, I knew that if I did not honor what I truly needed at the time, the boredom would only continue.
This is my point; none of this is rocket science. For the most part, we all know it is important to spend time with loved ones, and it is important to be in nature and take time for ourselves. However, if we are on autopilot and not checking in with ourselves with what we are truly needing, all of the tools, techniques and information we have are useless!
Here are few tips on how to handle “boredom.”
- Ask yourself, “What loving thing do I need to do for myself right now?”
- Listen to the message from your inner truth and TAKE ACTION even when you absolutely do not feel like it! You may get the message that you need to take action; if so, take action. At other times, you may get the message that you need slow down and take break. Either way, listen to it and follow through!
- Notice how your mood and energy shift after taking the action you really need to take. It is important to reflect on our actions and the impact they have on our overall well-being. Otherwise, they go unnoticed and we repeat the same cycles that keep us feeling stuck.
When you honor yourself and what you really need, you start to experience more joy in your life!
